Und he asked someone: \"Say, is this a party going on here?\" - \"Sort of\", one said \"they are squatting the Bethanien.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">roughly translated lyrics of the '<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rauch-Haus-Song\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rauch-Haus-Song<\/a>' by Ton Steine Scherben, 1972<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mariannenplatz is a big park-like square near the northern edge of the district <a href=\"https:\/\/heartofberl.in\/en\/district\/kreuzberg\/\">Kreuzberg<\/a>. The most famous address at the place would be the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethanien.info\/home\/aktuell.html\">'K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien'<\/a>, a former hospital, later squat, that now houses many social and cultural projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-frame\"><a href=\"https:\/\/heartofberl.in\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/heartofberl.in\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48\" srcset=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-384x216.jpg 384w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-768x432.jpg 768w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-256x144.jpg 256w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1-512x288.jpg 512w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Mariannenplatz1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 924px) 100vw, 54.6875rem\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text systemfont grey\"> <span class=\"image-license small grey\">[\u00a9]<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently the\u00a0Mariannenplatz was known for being the center of heavy <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/May_Day_in_Kreuzberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">May Day riots<\/a> that were successfully restrained by a huge family festival (the 'Myfest'), organized by a pool of local groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The riots in this area have a long history, though - it all dates back to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revolutions_of_1848_in_the_German_states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1848 revolutions<\/a> where many workers were shot in a riot. From 1961 to 1989 the Mariannenplatz directly adjoined the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin_Wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berlin Wall<\/a>. After the fall of the wall the 'squatting culture' significantly shaped the face, art and culture of the new, re-united Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-frame\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/heartofberl.in\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/heartofberl.in\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau-384x457.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53\" srcset=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau-384x457.jpg 384w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau-256x305.jpg 256w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau-512x609.jpg 512w, \/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/Marianne_van_Oranje-Nassau.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, (max-width: 924px) 33vw, 17.1875rem\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Princess Marianne of Orange-Nassau <span class=\"image-license small grey\">[\u00a9]<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the notorious 'obstinate' attitude that seems to radiate from this place and is still graspable may have it's origins a lot earlier in history. The square was named after <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Marianne_of_the_Netherlands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Princess Marianne of Orange-Nassau<\/a>, who reportedly was much more self-confident and unusually progressive than women were allowed to be in her time. She left her unfaithful husband to elope with her coachman - a slap in the male-dominated prussian face. \ud83d\ude1b<br>Then she bought a castle, made it a museum and a cultural center and supported local artist. Marianne and the squatters obviously were inspired by very similar spirits! She was banned from here homeland Prussia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mariannenplatz has a turbulent and sympathetic history.
